High School Theatre

 

 

The Briarcrest Christian High School theatre program is 
designed to allow students who are interested in acting, set design and technical theatre a christian environment to explore their God given talents. 

 The high school curriculum includes Introduction to 
Theatre Arts, Speech Communication, Production Workshop, and Honors Acting. 

The production during the fall semester is a 
classical, modern or musical selection.  Past fall productions 
include A Midsummer Night's Dream, Father of the 
Bride, The Taming of the Shrew, The Crucible, Neil 
Simon's female version of The Odd Couple, The Nerd,
The Fantasticks, Rumors, Once Upon a Mattress and Our Town. The high school production in the spring semester is a musical that involves all areas of the finearts department:  drama, visual arts and choir.  Some past musicals include Peter Pan, Annie, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Carousel, She Loves Me, Oklahoma!, Into the Woods, Hello Dolly!, Beauty and the Beast, Forever Plaid, Shout the Mod Musical, Les Miserbales, You're A Good Man Charlie Brown, and Anything Goes.

The drama department encourages its participants to 
realize the message of James 1:17a: 

  "All good and perfect gifts are from above . . . ."

 

High School Class Descriptions  

 Introduction to Theatre (Theatre Arts)      Instructor:  Ashleigh Williams

  • This drama course is an introduction to theatre and basic acting.  Principles of improvisation, theatre history and teatre as an art form are covered the first semester.  Stage blocking, monologures, enesemble acting, short dramas, basic make-up and basic stage craft are covered in the second semester.  The course is a performance class.  Students are expected to work diligently toward an excellent product.  Reading, writing, rehearsing adn memorizing are vital to success in Theatre Arts.  The clas is interactive and energetic.  Play attendance and critique are required each quarter.  Contribution on some level to the school play(s) is also required.

 Communication Arts (Speech)               Instructor:  Ashleigh Williams

  • Students will develop the skills to generate ideas, research topics, organize information, and prepare for oral presentations.  In order to become a more effective communicator, students will prepare ideas in an organized format, speak clearly with confidence and poise and listen critically to others.  The student will be introduced to basic public speaking techniques, discussion, debates, communication theory, parliamentary procedure, oral interpretation, and dramatic performance concepts. Both formal and casual speech making assignments are part of the course of study.  Reading and critical thinking skills are also emphasized.  

Honors Acting                                          Instructor:  Ashleigh Williams

  • This course is a study of techniques of theatre arts including acting, directing, design and playwriting.  The history and literature of drama are broadly explored.  Training in theory and technique of acting leading to realistic characterization are also covered.  Focus on developing concentration, observation, analytical skill and on delineating motivation and actions of characters in improvisation and scene work.

 

Production Workshop                     Instructors: Ashleigh Williams and Ryan Stone

  • PRODUCTION WORKSHOP provides a workshop setting for students who desire to learn basic techniques and gain practical experience in all phases of theatre, recorded sound, live sound, and film production. While students are required to take segments in each area, they can choose a specialty in which to focus more of their time.  Students will learn the production aspects of theatre through work on the school’s plays and musicals.  Aspects of sound, light and video will be taught to teach the skills required to engineer, plan and produce various shows, concerts and plays. Industry experts are brought in to augment the curriculum. Because the class is co-curricular, many after-school events are a part of the course grade. This course is open to students in grades 9-12 after successful application and an interview process with the Director of Theatre Arts, Technical Director and Director of Fine Arts.
