Briarcrest Middle School Takes Flight With Peter Pan, Jr. Live On Stage In Sparks Chapel
Briarcrest Christian Middle School students will take flight bringing Disney’s Peter Pan, Jr. to the Briarcrest stage April 16, 17 and 18 with evening performances at 7:00 pm. On Saturday, April 18, there will also be a matinee beginning at 2:00 pm. There will also be a visiting school performance with limited seating on April 17 at 1:15 pm.
Disney’s Peter Pan, Jr., based on the Disney film and J.M. Barrie's enchanting play is a modern version of a classic tale about a boy who wouldn’t grow up! The score includes new arrangements of classic Disney songs, such as "Following the Leader," "You Can Fly," "The Second Star to the Right" and "Yo Ho, A Pirate's Life for Me." This production will introduce flying to the new stage at Sparks Chapel. Flying by Foy, a professional flying company, will supply training and gear to take our students to “new heights.” Peter Pan will be portrayed by seventh grade student, Benjamin Cheng. Ben played Flounder in BCMS production of “Disney’s Little Mermaid, Jr.” last year. However, Ben is very involved in theater throughout our area, having portrayed Gavroche in Playhouse on the Square’s Production of Les Mis, Young Peter in Theater Memphis’ “Boy from Oz” and he was recently cast in the title role of Billy Elliot in Playhouse on the Square’s, “Billy Elliot.” Wendy will be portrayed by Avery Veteto.
Real life brothers, Brock and Will Draper will play Darling brothers, Michael and John. Captain Hook will be played by Hayden Gray who is also no newcomer to the Memphis community and Briarcrest stage. Hayden was seen as Sebastian in BCMS’ production of “Disney’s Little Mermaid, Jr.” last year as well. Smee will be portrayed by Cooper Neal who played Scuttle in “Little Mermaid”. Cooper won the Orpheum’s Judge’s Bravo Award for his performance in BCHS’s production of Disney’s Tarzan as part of the Orpheum’s High School Musical Theatre Competition in 2013.
The production will be directed by Melody Weintraub. This is the 7th production she has directed at Briarcrest. Other productions include; “School House Rock Live, Jr.,” “Music Man, Jr.,” “Disney’s Alladin, Jr.,” “Wizard of Oz,” “Bye Bye Birdie,” and “Disney’s The Little Mermaid, Jr.” Her assistant director is Clayton Williams and Justin Pepper is Musical Director. Technical Director is Ryan Stone and the amazing choreography is designed by Tamara Prince-Parrish.
