Middle School Art Teacher Teaches Art in Saipan This Summer
Briarcrest Middle School Art teacher Melody Weintraub and her husband Jeff, recently returned from a trip to Saipan to visit their daughter Betsy who is a prosecutor there. Saipan is part of the Marianna Islands in the South Pacific. It is located west of Hawaii and east of Japan. It is a Commonwealth of the United States. While in Saipan, Mrs. Weintraub was invited to teach an art class at the Dan Dan Middle School. Since she knew in advance of the invitation, Mrs. Weintraub was able to bring along some supplies from her classroom to share with the students in Saipan.
“I was so grateful that Briarcrest supported my venture,” says Weintraub. “I decided to teach a lesson in watercolor. I taught the students how to paint a seascape using ordinary objects like a toothbrush for splattering a sandy beach and a cut-up credit card for creating textures. They were very engaged in the lesson and my time with them was extended so that they could finish their paintings. Mr. Fred, the Dan Dan Art Teacher was very gracious to give me this opportunity. It was an experience I will never forget.”
Mrs. Weintraub intends to share the experience with her own Middle School Art students next year. “Who knows? “ says Weintraub, there might even be a collaboration in the works for our combined art classes.”
