Voice Lessons
Briarcrest Studio of Voice
Exceptional Bel Canto Training
True voice lessons involve direct, physiological instruction as to how students should properly develop vocal tone, projection, placement, posture, diction, and vowel shape. There is a stark difference between this and many "voice lessons" that focus only on learning songs and preparing for the next big show or performance. A combination of highly trained instructors and focused, proven pedagogy has made the Briarcrest Studio of Voice one of the preeminent studios in the region.
Our students regularly make All West and All State Honor Choirs, TN Governor's School for the Arts, and National GRAMMY Jazz Ensembles. They have won pageants, fairs, and competitions. They have earned scholarships to attend some of the top music schools in the country, including Berklee College of Music, North Texas, Southern Miss, American Musical and Dramatic Academy, Belmont University, UT Knoxville, and many more.
Students interested in the voice studio should choose three voice teachers based on preference. Teachers will place students based on voice type, age, personality, gender, and experience. Please note that there is a slightly higher rate if you choose Mr. Frizzell and he is assigned to you.
At the end of the year, students participate in a formal recital.
Vocal Masterclass
In addition to the individual voice lessons, we are offering an enrichment program called Vocal Masterclass. The vocal master class is designed to be a supplement and reinforcement to Briarcrest singers' private voice instruction. Twice a month, students will meet for an hour and fifteen minutes after school in the high school choir room. During this time, students will perform for each other and gain valuable feedback from Mr. Frizzell on vocal production, diction, posture, musicianship, and stage presence. In addition, Mrs. Liz Parsons will be accompanying each Vocal Master Class. Mrs. Parsons is one of the top accompanists in the region and has accompanied the Memphis Symphony Chorus for over many years.
Our experience has shown that these kind of group lessons greatly boost confidence and mitigate stage fright. They also allow students to bond as a community of performers, sharing their insights and goals. Whether one is looking at music or musical theatre for college or just interested in becoming a better singer, the Vocal Master Class facilitates a safe environment for performing while consistently pushing students to levels otherwise out of reach.
If students are already enrolled in private voice lessons either at Briarcrest or elsewhere, the Vocal Master Class will allow them to sing that prepared music regularly in front of a supportive audience. Getting ready for an audition? The Vocal Master Class is the perfect way to prepare.
Modeled after the most successful collegiate music schools, this program is unique to Briarcrest among Mid-South high schools. The cost is $295 for the entire year. To register for this, please simply e-mail Justin Pepper.
